About this program
UNSW's Bachelor of Biotechnology (Honours) applies living cells and biochemical molecules like proteins, DNA and RNA to real-world problems, covering pharmaceutical and food production, improved crops and livestock, environmental clean-up and forensic science, grounded in molecular genetics and molecular cell biology. Students learn how recombinant DNA technology enables creating and improving industrial organisms and producing useful proteins at scale, underpinning biopharmaceuticals like hormones, vaccines and new cancer therapies that are actively reshaping medicine. The degree also covers how genomic and proteomic techniques are generating new drug targets, and how microorganisms are being modified to control plant and animal diseases and pests. It suits students drawn to the practical, product-focused application of modern biology, positioning graduates for careers in pharmaceutical development, agricultural biotechnology, forensic science, diagnostics or environmental biotechnology.

Course structure
Students must complete 192 UOC when taken as a standalone program. Students in the Biotechnology (Honours) program are expected to complete the following requirements 168 UOC of Science courses : - 84 UOC of core courses in Stages 1 to 3 as specified below - 36 UOC of approved electives in Stages 2 and 3 - 48 UOC Honours year 12 UOC Free Electives . Admissions
UNSW Students may be granted Recognition for Prior Learning (RPL) which may or may not reduce the amount of learning required to achieve a degree at UNSW. Generally, RPL is only granted based on the completion of tertiary-level studies, but in exceptional circumstances may also include non-formal or informal learning such as professional experience.
