About this program
UNSW's Bachelor of Food Science (Honours) is a four-year professional degree preparing students for careers as food scientists, offered in two disciplines: Food Science and Technology, focused on product design and processing, or Food Science and Nutrition, focused on the chemistry, biochemistry, health and nutrition dimensions of food. Students build a solid natural and applied science foundation before specialising in areas including food chemistry, microbiology, toxicology, biotechnology, processing, packaging, preservation and product development, culminating in a research thesis project. An optional minor in Humanitarian Science and Technology lets students apply their food science knowledge toward UN Sustainable Development Goals, adding a genuine social-impact dimension to the technical training. Both streams lead to a Bachelor of Science (Honours) recognised by the Institute of Food Technologists, giving graduates internationally recognised professional standing in food science careers spanning product development, food safety and nutrition consulting.
