About this program
UNSW's Doctor of Philosophy in Bioinformatics trains researchers to organise, visualise, analyse and interpret the vast biological datasets now generated by high-throughput molecular technologies, reflecting how central bioinformatics has become to modern life sciences research. Based at the School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, students are trained by experienced bioinformaticians across different life sciences areas, with exposure to the latest technologies to develop genuinely multidisciplinary research capability. Because the program is entirely research-driven, the specific bioinformatics focus depends on the individual candidate's chosen research question, requiring a minimum of three years of full-time study toward an original thesis of normally no more than 100,000 words. It suits life sciences, computer science or mathematics graduates with a genuine research question at the intersection of biology and data science, aiming for an academic career or a specialised research role in genomics, computational biology or biomedical data science.

Admissions
A candidate for the degree shall have been awarded an appropriate degree of Bachelor with Honours from the University of New South Wales or a qualification considered equivalent from another university or tertiary institution at a level acceptable to the Research Committee of the appropriate Faculty. Candidates may be admitted to the PhD program after one year's full-time enrolment in a Masters by Research program, with the approval of the Faculty Postgraduate Affairs Committee. In exceptional cases an applicant who submits evidence of such other academic and professional qualifications as may be approved by the Committee may be permitted to enrol for the degree. However, as each Faculty manages its own PhD programs, prospective local and international research students should check with the relevant Faculty and/or School for specific entry requirements.
