Doctor of Philosophy - Business Law & Taxation
UNSW Sydney, Sydney, NSW, Australia
About this program
UNSW's Doctor of Philosophy in Business Law and Taxation is a research doctorate requiring a minimum of three years of full-time supervised research, culminating in an original thesis of normally no more than 100,000 words, submitted within four years of full-time study. Because the program is entirely research-driven, the specific focus depends on the individual candidate's chosen research question within business law or taxation, whether in corporate regulation, tax policy, commercial law or another related subfield, with some faculties also prescribing advanced coursework. It suits law, tax or business graduates with a genuine research question who are aiming for an academic career or a specialised research role in tax policy institutions, corporate regulatory bodies or business law research, rather than students seeking a taught postgraduate qualification like the Master of Taxation or Master of Laws. Entry requires an Honours-level bachelor's degree or equivalent judged suitable by the relevant faculty's research committee.

Career & PR pathway
Which careers in Law lead to skilled migration depends on the occupation, not the degree title. See the skilled occupation lists guide for which occupations are on each list, and the points calculator to check where you stand.
Admissions
A candidate for the degree shall have been awarded an appropriate degree of Bachelor with Honours from the University of New South Wales or a qualification considered equivalent from another university or tertiary institution at a level acceptable to the Research Committee of the appropriate Faculty. Candidates may be admitted to the PhD program after one year's full-time enrolment in a Masters by Research program, with the approval of the Faculty Postgraduate Affairs Committee. In exceptional cases an applicant who submits evidence of such other academic and professional qualifications as may be approved by the Committee may be permitted to enrol for the degree. However, as each Faculty manages its own PhD programs, prospective local and international research students should check with the relevant Faculty and/or School for specific entry requirements.
