PhD

Doctor of Philosophy - Social Sciences

UNSW Sydney, Sydney, NSW, Australia

About this program

UNSW's Doctor of Philosophy in Social Sciences covers research undertaken through the School of Social Sciences, spanning sociology, anthropology, criminology, politics and international relations, social work and policy studies, alongside the Social Policy Research Centre and the Centre for Social Research in Health, which covers social aspects of health including HIV, sexual health, drug use and Aboriginal health. Because the program is entirely research-driven, the specific discipline and research question depend on the individual candidate's interests and available supervision across these genuinely broad social science fields, requiring a minimum of three years of full-time study toward an original thesis of normally no more than 100,000 words. It suits social science graduates with a genuine research question who are aiming for an academic career or a specialised research role in policy, government, health research institutions or the community sector.
