About this program
UNSW's Master of Cyber Security (Research) lets students contribute new knowledge within cyber security through a genuine research project, developing critical research skills and methodologies alongside original scientific insight rather than following a purely taught curriculum. The program builds the experience and expert knowledge needed to confidently approach a research career in cyber security, distinguishing it from taught cyber security master's degrees focused on applied professional skills. It suits computer science, engineering or related graduates with a genuine cyber security research question who want a formal research credential, often as a pathway toward a PhD or a specialised research role in security research institutions, government cyber agencies, or industry security research and development teams, rather than students seeking a taught professional cyber security qualification.

Admissions
(1) A candidate for the degree shall have been awarded at a standard not below Honours Class 2 an appropriate degree of Bachelor from The University of New South Wales or a qualification considered equivalent from another university or tertiary institution. (2) In exceptional cases an applicant who submits evidence of such other academic and/or professional qualifications as may be approved by the Committee may be permitted to enrol for the degree. (3) If the Committee is not satisfied with the qualifications submitted by an applicant the Committee may require the applicant, before being permitted to enrol, to undergo such examination or carry out such work as the Committee may prescribe.
