About this program
UNSW's Master of Engineering Science lets engineers and graduates deepen expertise in their existing specialisation or, with Specialisation Authority approval, move into a different one, while meeting professional accreditation requirements and building genuine research capability through a complex, open-ended enquiry-based project. That project develops systematic problem-solving, project planning and communication skills, functioning as a preliminary step toward postgraduate research degrees for students who want to keep building research capacity after finishing. It suits practising engineers looking to formalise and deepen their expertise while staying connected to current thinking in their field, as well as those genuinely changing specialisation, though a specialisation change may require additional foundational coursework at the Specialisation Authority's discretion. The enquiry-based project component distinguishes this from a purely coursework-based engineering master's, giving graduates a taste of independent research before committing to a longer research degree.

Admissions
Up to 48 UOC of advanced standing may be granted to candidates with degrees from cognate programs. All courses completed towards the Graduate Certificate or the Graduate Diploma of Engineering Science at UNSW will be recognised for the purpose of advanced standing for the Master of Engineering Science. Entry into the Master of Engineering Science program depends on the specialisation you are applying for, and requires: For Biomedical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Geoenergy and Geostorage Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering and Engineering Geology, Sustainable Systems, Transport Engineering, Water Engineering: Catchments to Coasts, Water, Wastewater and Waste Engineering: • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (AQF Level 7/8 or equivalent), with a minimum credit average (equivalent to a UNSW WAM of 65); or • Bachelor's degree in Engineering Science (AQF Level 7 or equivalent), ...
