Apply through the university's international portal or an authorised agent. Direct application is available at most universities for Bhutanese citizens, and agents are widely used for the offer, deposit, and visa steps.

Have certified copies of your class 12 marksheet and any degree transcripts ready. English is the medium of instruction in Bhutan, so documents are usually already in English.

Plan the foreign-exchange side early. Moving tuition and living funds out of Bhutan needs Royal Monetary Authority approval, and the paperwork takes time. Apply three to four months ahead, since Evidence Level 3 processing runs longer.

Tuition runs from the low A$30,000s at regional and newer universities to the high A$40,000s and beyond at the Group of Eight. Living costs depend on the city: budget around A$30,000 a year, more in Sydney and Melbourne, less in Adelaide, Perth, and regional centres.

For undergraduate entry, universities take the Bhutan Higher Secondary Education Certificate (class 12). A three-year or four-year Bhutanese bachelor's degree, often from a Royal University of Bhutan college, is assessed for master's entry, with a four-year degree mapping more cleanly.

English is the medium of instruction in Bhutan. Universities may waive an English test on that basis, but the student visa has its own English rule, so confirm both.

International students hold the subclass 500 student visa. You apply after you receive and accept an offer and the university issues a Confirmation of Enrolment. You must meet the Genuine Student requirement, which replaced the Genuine Temporary Entrant test in March 2024, and show genuine access to funds.

In January 2026 Bhutan moved to student-visa Evidence Level 3, the highest tier. You now need to provide, upfront, several months of genuine bank statements, a documented source of funds, and authenticated academic records, and processing runs longer. Check the current level when you apply.

Applications commonly fail on funds that appear shortly before applying, a source of funds that is not clearly documented, and a study plan that does not follow on from previous study. A genuine savings history and Royal Monetary Authority paperwork that matches your stated funds are the strongest signals.

Most bachelor’s and master’s graduates qualify for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), which gives two to three years of full work rights. That skilled work is the usual step toward permanent residence through the points-tested visas.
