Applying from Malaysia
Apply through the university's international portal or an authorised agent. Direct application is the norm for Malaysian citizens, and English-language documents rarely need translation.
Several Australian universities run campuses or partner programs in Malaysia, for example Monash, Curtin, and Swinburne, and many local colleges offer 2+1 or 3+0 arrangements. You can also transfer credit from a Malaysian diploma or foundation program.

What it costs
Tuition runs from the low A$30,000s at regional and newer universities to the high A$40,000s and beyond at the Group of Eight. Living costs depend on the city: budget around A$30,000 a year, more in Sydney and Melbourne, less in Adelaide, Perth, and regional centres.

Your qualifications and English
For undergraduate entry, universities take STPM, A-Levels, the Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT), SAM, a recognised foundation program, or a Malaysian diploma with credit. SPM alone is usually not enough for direct degree entry.
A three-year or four-year Malaysian bachelor's degree is accepted for direct entry to Australian master's programs. Universities publish Malaysia-specific entry tables mapping your CGPA to their requirement.
Many Malaysian applicants are exempt from an English test based on their prior study in English. Confirm the exemption with the university and check whether the student visa also accepts it.
The student visa
International students hold the subclass 500 student visa. You apply after you receive and accept an offer and the university issues a Confirmation of Enrolment. You must meet the Genuine Student requirement, which replaced the Genuine Temporary Entrant test in March 2024, and show genuine access to funds.
Malaysia is at student-visa Evidence Level 1, the lowest tier. Many Malaysian applicants are not required to submit financial evidence or an English test result with the application, though Home Affairs can still ask for them. You must meet the Genuine Student requirement and hold a Confirmation of Enrolment.
A low evidence level is not a guaranteed grant. Applications still fail on a weak Genuine Student statement or a course that does not fit the applicant's background, so keep the study plan clear.

After you graduate
Most bachelor’s and master’s graduates qualify for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), which gives two to three years of full work rights. That skilled work is the usual step toward permanent residence through the points-tested visas.
