About this program
Avondale's Master of Arts equips Christian leaders for greater effectiveness in ministry within a church, school, hospital or the wider community, engaging students in advanced ministerial and theological studies and the application of research to new ministry contexts. It is offered with a specialisation in Pastoral Leadership, Chaplaincy Studies, Theology/Biblical Studies, or Youth and Family Ministry (Chaplaincy Studies and Youth and Family Ministry are subject to sufficient cohort numbers).
The course takes 1.5 years of full-time study. Admission: An Australian Bachelor of Ministry and/or Theology or equivalent, or Avondale's Graduate Certificate in Arts, or an overseas ministry or theology qualification comparable to an Australian Bachelor's degree or higher.

Course structure
12 units, 72 credit points, studied part time over 4 years (generally three units per year), all units worth 6 credit points unless stated otherwise. 3 core units (CMIN51100 Graduate Studies in Biblical Spirituality, THBB56600 Theology, Theory and Practice of Leadership for Ministry, CMIN52110 Discipleship and Disciple making) plus 5 specialisation units (e.g. Pastoral Leadership: THBB54100 Perspectives on Luke-Acts, THBB56500 Theology of Mission; Chaplaincy Studies: CHPL41500 Fundamentals of Counselling for Chaplains, CMIN56500 Clinical Pastoral Education 1, which includes 400 hours of approved clinical work) and either 4 electives, or 2 electives plus THRE51000 Research Project (6 credit points, 5000 words), or a research methods unit plus THRE52000 Extended Research Project (18 credit points, 15000 words). Students can exit with a Graduate Certificate in Arts after 4 units or a Graduate Diploma in Arts after 8 units. The New South Wales College of Clinical Pastoral Education accredits the clinical pastoral education units

Admissions
An Australian Bachelor of Ministry and/or Theology or equivalent, or Avondale's Graduate Certificate in Arts, or an overseas ministry or theology qualification comparable to an Australian Bachelor's degree or higher. Applicants for the Youth and Family Ministry or Chaplaincy specialisation may instead hold a Bachelor in Chaplaincy with a major in Theology, or a Bachelor of Education or Teaching with a major in Religious Studies, as approved by the Course Convenor. Applicants need at least two years of ministry or chaplaincy experience and current or recent employment in the field, plus a 250 word written summary of that experience and their reasons for enrolling.
