Bachelor of Game Design and Development

Macquarie University, Sydney, NSW, Australia

About this program

The Bachelor of Games Design and Development program aims to provide graduates with the necessary skills to be a successful video game designer, developer and producer. Recognising that the video games industry in Australia is small and jobs are hard to come by, we also intend to give graduates a wider variety of career options in software development and user experience design. The BGDD program comprises three streams, addressing three different skill areas important for the field: 1. Software development. Video games are complex pieces of software and their development requires all the skills of other software development projects, including programming, version control, and quality assurance testing. This stream also develops understanding and skills related to the production of computer graphics and technical art. 2. User experience (UX) design. Designing a video game requires a strong understanding of how interaction with game systems and representations motivate and shape player behaviours and experiences. This requires an understanding of theories for system and UX design, as well critical user testing and communication skills, to measure and shape how people engage with software and its psychological effects. 3. Software production. Video games are massive worldwide industry and game production is one of the most complex and multidisciplinary crafts. An informed producer of entertainment software needs to know best practices for effectively managing a diverse team as well as the cultural and market contexts within which their software will be produced and released.
