About this program
The Master of Commerce functions as pre-doctoral training at Monash rather than a standalone professional degree, built for high-achieving students who intend to go on to a Monash PhD in a business or economics discipline. Across the course you complete advanced coursework alongside supervised research methodology training, then design and carry out independent research in your chosen specialisation under close supervision, effectively rehearsing the doctoral process before committing to it. It's the compulsory pathway into PhD study for banking and finance, and the preferred pathway for accounting, econometrics and business statistics, economics, health economics, management and marketing studies specialisations. Entry is competitive, generally requiring a distinction average in relevant third-year units on top of a bachelor's degree in a related discipline. This isn't the right course for someone seeking a terminal master's qualification for industry; it exists specifically to prepare strong students for doctoral research and Monash assesses progression into the PhD on the same selection standards used for direct PhD entry.

Course structure
- The course comprises 96 credit points and requires the completion of one the Specialisations below. Each specialisation is structured into two parts
- Part A. Core research studies (48 credit points) and Part B. Advanced research studies (48 credit points). Accounting Banking and finance Econometrics and business statistics Economics Health economics Management Marketing studies Units can be identified using the Advanced search tool and filter for units in the current edition of the Handbook. The level of the unit is indicated by the first number in the unit code. You may need permission from the owning faculty to enrol in some units taught by other faculties

Admissions
Entry level 1: 96 credit points Duration: 2 years full time, 4 years part time An Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) in a *relevant discipline. A distinction grade average (70%) or above for four units (24 credit points) in a *relevant discipline at level three is required. Entry level 2: 48 credit points Duration: 1 year full time, 2 years part time An Australian bachelor honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline* with a grade average of at least (75%), or equivalent qualification approved by the faculty. *Relevant disciplines include: Accounting, Banking and Finance, Econometrics and Business Statistics, Economics, Health Economics, Management, Marketing and related cognate disciplines including Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Psychology, Sociology and other Social Sciences.
