About this program
The RMIT Bachelor of Social Science is a community-oriented, person-centred and hands-on degree exploring how society shapes people's lives and how students can be part of creating change. Students choose a specialisation in mental health and wellbeing, youth work or psychology, studying communication and practice skills with individuals, groups and families, ethics, mental health, youth work and First Nations perspectives. Graduates work in community services, youth work, mental health support, and social research and policy.

- Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Work integrated learning (WIL) Learning outcomes Year 1 Year 1 Mental Health and Wellbeing major In your first year, you'll build a strong foundation for future work in mental health, wellbeing and other human services. You'll learn how to communicate with people from different backgrounds, think critically and act ethically. You'll explore how society works and how policies shape people's lives, so you can better understand the world your service users live in. You'll also take your first counselling courses, where you'll start to connect theory with real-world practice. Across these subjects, you'll begin developing the practical skills and confidence you need to start working with people in a thoughtful, safe and supportive way. Youth Work major In your first year, you'll build the foundations for your future practice as a youth worker. You'll learn how to communicate with people from different backgrounds, think critically and act ethically in your work with young people. You'll also explore how society and policy shape young people's lives, so you can understand the bigger picture they're navigating. Alongside this, you'll take your first practice skills course, where you'll be introduced to the core ways youth workers support and work with young people in real-world settings. Psychology major In your first year, you'll begin your psychology studies and start the first two subjects in your chosen minor. You can choose from areas such as counselling, mental health and wellbeing, youth work, inclusive education, or art and social sciences. Prerequisites: Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English other than EAL; or a study score of at least 27 in English as an Additional Language (EAL) or equivalent studies . Rankings and adjustment factors Entry to this course is competitive. Eligible applicants are ranked and selected in order of merit based on their academic achievement plus any adjustment factors. You may be eligible to receive adjustment factors which include equity access schemes and/or subject adjustments to a maximum of 28 aggregate adjustment points.
