Bachelor of Medical Science (Exit award)
University of Queensland, Brisbane, QLD, Australia
About this program
The Bachelor of Medical Science (Exit award) is granted at the University of Queensland to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Medical Science / Doctor of Medicine dual degree who complete the 2 year pre-medicine component, and typically a further stage of the Doctor of Medicine, before choosing or needing to leave the combined program early, since UQ approves an early exit after 3 years of this pathway. The full dual degree lets students graduate as a doctor at least a year earlier than traditional postgraduate medicine pathways, combining tailored pre-medicine study with a 4 year Doctor of Medicine, and covers traditional science and biomedical science alongside public health, humanities and computer science or information technology. A student exiting with the Bachelor of Medical Science keeps a recognised science degree covering that coursework, useful for roles in biomedical research, health administration, science communication or further postgraduate study, without the clinical training and registration pathway that completing the full Doctor of Medicine provides.

Course structure
1 term of coursework
- This is an exit award from UQ's Bachelor of Medical Science / Doctor of Medicine dual degree, not a program with its own separate course list. The first 2 years (pre-medicine) cover 8 core foundational courses in Year 1 and 5 core courses plus 3 electives in Year 2, spanning traditional science, biomedical science, public health, humanities and computer science or information technology, before transitioning into Doctor of Medicine clinical coursework in later years
Admissions
There is no direct entry pathway for this award. Students reach it only by first being admitted to and enrolling in UQ's Bachelor of Medical Science / Doctor of Medicine, which for domestic school leavers requires an adjusted ATAR of 95 or equivalent, Queensland Year 12 General English and Mathematical Methods (Units 3 and 4, C), a competitive UCAT ANZ score, and a multiple mini-interview.
