About this program
UQ's Bachelor of Veterinary Technology trains students as para-veterinary healthcare specialists, based at UQ's Gatton campus alongside its Small Animal Hospital and Equine Hospital. Core study covers basic sciences such as chemistry and biochemistry, animal handling, welfare and behaviour, applied and clinical nutrition, and diagnostic techniques for animal disease, with electives available in agribusiness, wildlife science and animal production. Students complete 14 weeks of clinical rotation and placement in third year, learning surgical and medical nursing principles and veterinary practice management alongside the small and large animal health curriculum. The program is taught by internationally regarded animal health academics and prepares graduates for a broad range of roles across clinical, commercial, research and diagnostic settings. Typical destinations include veterinary technician, veterinary nurse, laboratory technician and biosecurity officer roles.
