About this program

The Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine is Tasmania's combined medical pathway: three years of medical science foundations followed by the four-year MD, rather than a separate graduate-entry MD alone. Its defining feature is where students end up training: the university runs rural clinical schools across Tasmania (including Launceston and rural placement sites), reflecting a deliberate policy push, shared with several Australian medical schools, to train doctors in the kind of regional and rural settings they're most needed in rather than concentrating clinical training entirely in one metropolitan teaching hospital.

The medical science years build the standard preclinical foundation (anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology) before students move into the MD's clinical years, which are built around extended rural and rotational placements across Tasmania's hospital network rather than a single fixed hospital site, giving graduates broader exposure to generalist practice than a purely metropolitan clinical school typically offers.

Graduates emerge with provisional registration and move into internship and residency, with Tasmania's own health system, persistently short of doctors in regional areas, a common and immediate destination, alongside interstate and, for some graduates, international training pathways.

Which careers in Nursing & Health Sciences lead to skilled migration depends on the occupation, not the degree title. See the skilled occupation lists guide for which occupations are on each list, and the points calculator to check where you stand.

Admissions

Completion of Year 12 with an ATAR (including any rural adjustment) of at least 95, plus a valid UCAT ANZ score used as a secondary ranking method. The University of Tasmania does NOT conduct interviews for this program - selection is by ATAR + UCAT ANZ only (domestic pathway); graduate-entry applicants are instead assessed on GPA + GAMSAT.
