About this program
UNSW's Bachelor of Science (Medicine) Honours is a one-year research program available to high-achieving year 4 students in the six-year Medicine program or the Arts/Medicine double degree, letting students step out of standard medical training to complete supervised research. Since 2022, students choose between a coursework-intensive option, reducing the research project to 18 units of credit alongside coursework from an approved specialisation and General Practice units, or an Extended Research option with a larger 36-unit research project. The year builds appreciation for research's role in medical science, experience presenting scientific findings, and grounding in research philosophy and technique that can support a future specialised medical research career, alongside developing the ability to interpret evidence underpinning clinical practice. It suits medical students who've performed strongly enough to be eligible and want genuine research experience woven into their medical training rather than treating research as separate from clinical education.

Admissions
Students with a WAM of 65 (see WAM calculation below) and have completed 12 UoC general education before Term 1 in year 4, are eligible to apply. The WAM is calculated from the following courses: MFAC1521 Beginnings, Growth and Development A MFAC1522 Beginnings, Growth and Development B MFAC1523 Health Maintenance A MFAC1524 Health Maintenance B MFAC1525 Ageing and Endings A MFAC1526 Ageing and Endings B MFAC1527 Society & Health In addition, students are required to pass the following courses (including passing subsequent supplementary exams, but if a student fails a course then they will be ineligible): MFAC1501 Foundations MFAC1511 Phase 1 Portfolio MFAC1512 End of Phase Examination MFAC1513 Clinical and Communication Skills Examination MFAC2511 Phase 2 Portfolio MFAC2512 Integrated Clinical Examination
