About this program
UNSW's Practice-based PhD in Built Environment is available across architecture, city planning, computational design, construction management and property, industrial design, interior architecture and landscape architecture, combining a creative Project with a 40,000 to 50,000-word Dissertation that together form the PhD thesis. The Project can take many forms depending on discipline, including architectural or urban design, construction methods, industrial or interior design, or landscape design, using media ranging from drawings and prototypes to digital fabrication, film or virtual reality, provided it can be fully documented electronically for examination. All candidates complete a research seminar course in their first session plus a specialised thesis writing workshop, building research methodology and academic writing skills specific to practice-based research. It suits built environment practitioners with a genuinely creative, project-based research question who want their design or making practice recognised as legitimate doctoral research, rather than a purely written dissertation.

Admissions
As a general guide, the minimum requirement for admission to a PhD degree is an appropriate undergraduate degree with first or upper second class honours or a completed Masters by Research degree in a field represented within UNSW Built Environment faculty or another relevant discipline. Candidates may be admitted to the PhD program after one year's full-time enrolment in a Masters by Research program, with the approval of the Faculty Research Committee. In exceptional cases an applicant who submits evidence of such other academic and professional qualifications as may be approved by the Committee may be permitted to enrol for the degree.
