Architecture in Australia is a two-part qualification: a three-year Bachelor of Design or Architectural Studies, then a two-year Master of Architecture, which is the professional degree accredited by the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia.

Both stages usually require a portfolio. Registration as an architect needs the accredited master's plus logged practical experience and the Architectural Practice Examination. Fees are in the mid AUD 30,000s at most universities.

Entry requirements for Architecture

Accreditation from the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia (AACA) applies to the Master of Architecture specifically, not the bachelor's that leads into it. Check a program's accreditation status at the master's level before assuming the whole two-part sequence counts, especially if you're weighing a bachelor's at one university against a master's at another.

The bachelor's stage generally asks for a design portfolio alongside academic results, on top of the standard IELTS 6.5 most bachelor degrees want. The master's is more selective about the portfolio, since it's the professionally accredited half of the qualification.

Finishing the Master of Architecture doesn't make you a registered architect. You still need the Architectural Practice Examination (APE), sat after documented practical experience, administered separately from your degree by your state or territory's architects board.

Can I register as an architect in Australia with a master's from another country?

The Architects Accreditation Council of Australia runs an overseas qualifications assessment. An accredited Australian Master of Architecture is the most direct route to eligibility for registration.
