About this program
UNSW's Doctor of Systems Engineering is a research doctorate requiring a minimum of three years of full-time supervised research, culminating in an original thesis of normally no more than 100,000 words, submitted within four years of full-time study. Because the program is entirely research-driven, the specific focus depends on the individual candidate's chosen research question within systems engineering, whether in complex systems design, engineering management or systems integration, with some advanced coursework also prescribed depending on background. It suits engineering or IT graduates with a genuine research question who are aiming for an academic career or a specialised research role in complex engineering systems design, defence systems, infrastructure engineering or technology management, rather than students seeking a taught postgraduate engineering qualification. Entry requires an appropriate research background judged suitable by the relevant faculty's research committee.

Admissions
As a general guide, the UNSW entry requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy are as follows: A candidate for the degree shall have been awarded an appropriate degree of Bachelor with Honours from the University of New South Wales or a qualification considered equivalent from another university or tertiary institution at a level acceptable to the UNSW Canberra Higher Degree Committee. In exceptional cases an applicant who submits evidence of such other academic and professional qualifications as may be approved by the Committee may be permitted to enrol for the degree. However, as each Faculty manages its own PhD programs, prospective local and international research students should check with UNSW Canberra and/or School for specific entry requirements.
