Bachelor of Music (Musicology)

Australian Institute of Music, Sydney, NSW, Australia

About this program

Musicology is AIM's non-performance major, built for students more interested in writing, researching, and critically engaging with music than performing it themselves, though a foundational level of practical musicianship is still expected. Coursework moves through music history and contextual studies, critical writing, and the theoretical and analytical skills used in scholarship, program notes, liner notes, and music journalism.

Because it sits inside the same trimester-based, industry-facing institution as AIM's performance majors, Musicology students study alongside performers, composers, and creative technology students rather than in an isolated academic track. Collaborative units draw them into critiquing and contextualising work being produced elsewhere in the building, a genuinely different experience to a musicology degree at a conventional university conservatorium.

Graduates go into music journalism, arts administration, artist management, music education, and further postgraduate research, with AIM's industry-facing culture giving Musicology graduates practical exposure to the music business that a purely academic musicology degree elsewhere often lacks.
