Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary)

Avondale University, Cooranbong, NSW, Australia

About this program

This is Avondale's combined arts/teaching degree for people who know from day one they want to teach secondary school. It runs longer than the standalone BA (the paired BSc/BTeaching runs 32 units over four years, and this Arts equivalent follows a similar extended structure) because it has to satisfy both a full arts major and NSW Education Standards Authority accreditation requirements for secondary teaching in that subject area.

Graduates come out with two teaching methods areas typically drawn from English, History, Music, or Religious Studies, which matters practically: secondary schools, and especially the Adventist school system Avondale feeds heavily into, hire teachers who can cover two subjects on a timetable, not one. Professional experience placements are substantial and staged across the degree, from early observation placements in first year building up to a full practicum block in final year, rather than concentrated into a single end-of-course prac.
