About this program
The Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) equips graduates to teach in Christian, independent and state high schools in Australia and overseas, with secondary teaching areas spanning Biology, Business Studies and Commerce, Chemistry, Computing Technologies, Design and Technology, English, Food Technology, Geography, Health and Physical Education, History, Home Economics, Industrial Technology, Legal Studies, Mathematics, Music, Religious Studies, Science, Technology and Applied Studies, Textiles Technology and Visual Arts. Four Professional Experience placements, including a possible overseas placement, put theory into practice across the degree. The course is available fully online for students who choose English or History/Geography as their Major/Specialisation.

Course structure
- 32 units over four years full time (or part time equivalent), combining a full BA content major (8 units) with a second teaching method area and an Education core covering areas such as curriculum and pedagogy, classroom management and assessment and reporting, plus four staged Professional Experience placements running from Year 1 observation through to a final year practicum block, meeting NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) secondary accreditation requirements. Applicants selecting Chemistry as a teaching area need recent HSC Chemistry and Mathematics (Advanced) or equivalent
- Mathematics teaching areas need HSC Mathematics Extension 1, or Mathematics Advanced plus MATH16400 General Mathematics
- Music admission is by Conservatorium audition (AMEB Grade 6 performance, Grade 4 musicianship/theory, or equivalent)

Admissions
A selection rank of at least 63 (ATAR plus adjustment factors), or 24 points in the IB Diploma, or NZ Year 13 NCEA Level 3 university entrance, or an appropriate Avondale-approved entrance exam score, for school leavers not currently in Year 12; an Australian Certificate IV or higher (or equivalent NZ certificate) for VET entrants; at least 2 completed Bachelor's units, a bridging/enabling course, or 3 completed units of Avondale's Undergraduate Certificate in University Preparation for those who have already attended university; overseas qualifications assessed under Avondale's Admission Policy (HE) Appendix 1. All applicants must submit the Personal Statement for Initial Teacher Training (PSITE), and Chemistry, Mathematics and Music teaching areas carry additional discipline specific criteria (see curriculum).
