About this program

Deakin's Master of IT is organised into four deliberate stages rather than a loose bundle of electives: a foundation block for students without a strong computing background, a fundamentals block, a mastery block, and a final specialisation or elective block: two people can graduate with quite different course transcripts depending on how much catching-up they needed early on. That staged structure is one reason the course accepts graduates from non-IT bachelor's degrees, not just computer science.

Specialisation options run through Deakin's SIT/MIS-coded units and typically cover areas like data science, cyber security, and enterprise systems, taught out of Deakin's Cloud Campus infrastructure. Deakin was an early mover into fully online postgraduate IT delivery in Australia and still runs a large online cohort alongside on-campus students at Burwood. Work-integrated learning options (industry-based capstone projects with real client organisations) are a recurring feature of the specialisation stage, giving graduates a portfolio project rather than just coursework to point to.
