About this program
La Trobe's Juris Doctor combines core legal foundations with elective subjects designed in collaboration with judges and senior lawyers, taught through small, flexible evening classes at the City Campus in the heart of Melbourne's legal and business district. Students gain real-world experience through placements and internships with law firms, government and community organisations, including the La Trobe Legal Clinic.
Students can start in Semester 1 or get a head start the preceding November, allowing the degree to be fast-tracked to two and a half years. Students who complete all core subjects by the end of Semester 1 of their final year can also undertake practical legal training, gaining both qualifications within three years. The degree satisfies the academic requirements for admission to practice law in Victoria, subject to the additional requirements set by the Victorian Legal Admissions Board.

You must first be admitted to an Australian state legal profession, which for an overseas or JD graduate means passing the assessed academic subjects, completing Practical Legal Training, and being admitted by the state Supreme Court, before the occupation is realistically usable for a visa.

An Australian Bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) with a 60 percent or greater average; or a Bachelor's degree with three or more years of professional work experience and a personal statement; or a Bachelor's degree and an LSAT score of at least 150; or an equivalent qualification and experience approved by the Law School with a current CV and personal statement.
