Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine

Monash's Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine is a five-year integrated medical program starting with a largely campus-based first year at the Monash University School of Rural Health in Gippsland, covering foundational medical and behavioural sciences alongside clinical skills, ethics and medical law. From year three onward, teaching moves into clinical settings across metropolitan Melbourne and rural Victoria, with students spending around 40 hours a week at clinical sites and a final year of rotations through settings like aged care and emergency medicine plus a specialty selective placement. All Commonwealth-supported students complete at least four weeks of rural clinical experience, and some spend up to two years at a rural site, reflecting Monash's strong focus on training doctors for regional and rural practice. Students can intermit to complete the honours year of the Bachelor of Medical Science before returning to finish their medical training. On graduation, students gain provisional registration with Ahpra and the Medical Board of Australia, moving into a compulsory hospital internship year before full registration and further specialty training in fields like general practice, surgery or psychiatry.
