About this program
Monash's Master of Applied Econometrics trains econometric specialists rather than general economists, with a strong emphasis on the analytical and technical skills needed for corporate, government and professional econometric careers. Students choose a theme, macro and financial econometrics, micro and health econometrics, or data analytics for energy and climate, and build expertise through both coursework and a research component covering applied econometrics, time series analysis and financial and macro or micro econometrics. The course is explicitly designed to also prepare high-performing students for a subsequent PhD, so the research training goes beyond what's typical in a purely applied master's degree. It suits students who want deep technical econometric skills for roles in central banks, financial institutions, government economic agencies or corporate strategy teams, and the thematic structure means graduates leave with genuine specialisation rather than a broad economics overview.

- The course comprises 72 credit points structured in three parts: Part A. Advanced preparatory studies (12 credit points), Part B. Core studies (36 credit points) and Part C. Elective studies (24 credit points). Units are 6 credit points unless otherwise stated. Part A. Advanced preparatory studies (12 credit points) You must complete two units from the following (12 credit points): ETF5910 Introductory applied econometrics / ETC5241 Introductory econometrics ETF5320 Applied econometrics / ETC5341 Applied econometrics Part B. Core studies (36 credit points) You must choose the Applied Pathway or the Research pathway (there is a hurdle requirement for entry into this pathway).
