Master of Bioinformatics
Monash University, Melbourne, VIC, Australia
About this program
The Master of Bioinformatics sits within Monash's Biomedicine Discovery Institute and trains students to work at the intersection of biology, statistics and computing, integrating different types of biological data to answer research questions that neither a pure biology nor a pure computer science background could tackle alone. Early units build foundational knowledge in biostatistics, computational biology and genomics before the course splits into two streams from the third semester: a research stream where students design and run an original project in a host laboratory under supervision, and a coursework stream that adds advanced bioinformatics and project management units instead. That split lets students choose between building toward further research degrees or a more applied, industry-facing skill set. It suits graduates from biology, computer science, mathematics or statistics backgrounds who want to specialise in the growing field of computational biology, with career paths spanning genomics research, biotech, pharmaceutical data analysis and academic research support roles.
