About this program
Monash's Master of Surgery is a research-only degree for doctors who already hold a Doctor of Medicine or equivalent from Monash or another approved university, at least two years post-qualification, and who are pursuing or have been accepted into surgical training with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Rather than coursework, students independently investigate a self-formulated surgical research problem under supervision, contributing genuinely new knowledge to the discipline of surgery. Because entry requires an existing medical qualification and active pursuit of surgical specialty training, this degree functions as a research credential that complements formal surgical training rather than a standalone qualification for people outside medicine. - Areas of research This course may be undertaken in any of the areas of surgical research offered by the Faculty. Course requirements This course consists of a research and thesis component. You must, in consultation with and under the direct supervision of a member/s of the academic staff (your Main Supervisor must have full Monash University supervisory accreditation): 1. Carry out a program of research on an agreed topic approved by the Faculty in your chosen discipline for a specified period, including attending and/or presenting at seminars and other related activities as indicated by the Faculty 2. Submit for assessment a thesis of not more than 50,000 words on the program of research which meets the requirements of the examiners. The thesis should embody the results of the student's investigation, which demonstrates independence of thought and the student's ability to carry out ..
Admissions
An applicant for admission must: have qualified not less than two years previously for the degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent at Monash University or another university approved by GRC; intend to pursue a career in surgery or have applied for or been accepted into the Surgical Education and Training program of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons or an equivalent surgical training program approved by GRC; or hold a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons or equivalent higher surgical qualification as approved by GRC; and have been substantially engaged, since qualifying for the degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD), Bachelor of Surgery (BS) or its equivalent, in the practice and study of surgery or scientific work relevant to the practice of surgery to the satisfaction of GRC.
