Bachelor of Engineering Honours

Murdoch University, Perth, WA, Australia

About this program

Murdoch's engineering degree is genuinely small in scope compared to the sprawling multi-discipline programs at the larger Group of Eight universities. It offers three specialisations (Electrical and Renewable Energy Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Industrial Control and Automation Engineering) rather than a dozen, and leans into that focus with a facility the school describes as the only one of its kind at a Western Australian university: a real-world engineering plant with a dedicated control room, used for hands-on training rather than simulation alone.

Every student completes 450 hours of professional work placement as part of the degree, and honours is embedded rather than a separate bolt-on year students apply for separately. Everyone finishes with an individual research or industry project in year four, applying material from the first three years to a genuine open-ended problem. That focus on renewable energy and industrial automation tracks reasonably well with Western Australia's resources and energy sector employment base, which is a different emphasis than engineering programs oriented toward software or biomedical applications.

Given the specialisation is fixed early relative to some universities' common-first-year models, students choosing this course should have a reasonably clear sense already of whether they want electrical/renewables, environmental, or automation/control work.
