Bachelor of Information Technology

Murdoch University, Perth, WA, Australia

About this program

Murdoch's IT degree is built around named majors rather than a single generalist stream, and Cyber Security and Forensics is the one the school markets hardest: it covers network security, software security, computer forensics and penetration testing, and it carries Australian Computer Society accreditation at the Professional level, which is a recognised bar for graduates entering security roles in Australia.

Students aren't locked to a single major either; the course structure explicitly supports a double major within IT, or pairing an IT major with a major from another Murdoch degree, which lets students build combinations like cyber security plus data science or IT plus criminology that a single-major degree wouldn't allow. Delivery mixes on-campus lectures with lab-based practical work and industry placement opportunities, which matters in a discipline where a lot of the actual skill (network configuration, exploit analysis) doesn't transfer well from lecture slides alone.

Career outcomes cited by the school for cyber-focused graduates include security consultant, forensic investigator and database administrator roles: a broader spread than "penetration tester" alone, reflecting that most entry-level security jobs in Australia are still generalist information-security roles rather than narrow specialisations.
