Graduate Certificate in Contemporary Mental Health

Murdoch University, Perth, WA, Australia

About this program

This graduate certificate is designed mainly for registered nurses who want to develop specialist skills in caring for people with mental health issues, and aims to build excellence in contemporary mental health care to meet professional development needs around specialist practice and evidence-based therapeutic approaches. Students work on formulating safe, caring, respectful, responsive, and therapeutic relationships with people experiencing mental health issues across a range of healthcare contexts. The course is recommended for registered nurses wanting to expand their skills in specialist or immediate mental health care, and is also relevant to allied health professionals and nurses in general areas such as emergency departments who regularly work with patients receiving mental health care. Murdoch anticipates the course will meet many of the criteria for credentialed mental health nurse status with the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses, though discussions with the college are ongoing. Registered nurse is one of the most reliably nominated skilled occupations in Australia, and this certificate builds on that base qualification rather than functioning as a standalone migration pathway.
