About this program
Law Honours is available to students who achieve strong results throughout their undergraduate Law degree. It is an additional year of study that builds on the knowledge developed during the undergraduate course. Students work closely with an academic supervisor on an intensive research project of their own choosing, and further develop their research skills through an advanced research skills unit and additional coursework. Legal practice is a difficult migration pathway for international graduates: solicitor and barrister appear on skilled occupation lists, but an overseas graduate must first be admitted to practise law in an Australian state, which requires assessed academic subjects, Practical Legal Training, and admission by the state Supreme Court. Many international law graduates instead use the degree for policy, compliance, or corporate legal-adjacent roles, or for further study, none of which are nominated migration occupations. The program is delivered by Murdoch University in Western Australia.

Course structure
- The Honours year combines coursework units in research methods with an independent research project completed under the supervision of an academic staff member
- culminating in a thesis assessed alongside coursework results to determine Honours classification

Admissions
Completion of a Bachelor Degree (AQF level 7) or equivalent in the same discipline or cognate area with a Distinction average, subject to the availability of a suitable supervisor and approval by the Honours Academic Chair. Students interested in Honours enrolment are advised to contact the Law School Honours Academic Chair before application to discuss supervision of their potential research.
