About this program
The Master of Teaching (Secondary) is a 1.75 year, full-time initial teaching qualification for graduates who hold a bachelor's degree in a non-education field relevant to teaching, such as English or communications. It prepares graduates to teach students from Years 7 to 12 in a chosen teaching area. Students who choose Science or Humanities and Social Sciences (HaSS) as their teaching area cover the full Years 7 to 10 curriculum in that subject before specialising for Years 11 and 12. Students also choose a second teaching area, which qualifies them to teach Years 7 to 10 in that subject; Murdoch states it is the only Australian university offering Vocational Education and Training (VET) as a second teaching area option. Holding two teaching areas is intended to broaden graduates' employability. The course covers the role of education in society, secondary classroom management, and includes school placements across the secondary years. Secondary teachers in maths, science, and languages are consistently on Australia's skilled occupation lists and nominated by several states, though graduates must register with the relevant state teaching authority before they can work in Australian schools.

Admissions
A recognised Bachelor's degree or higher, with extensive specialist study relevant to the chosen learning areas of the Secondary curriculum (i.e. English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, Health and Physical Education). To be eligible, applicants seeking a Teaching Area of focus must have six units of study relevant to the chosen discipline, consistent with the WA secondary school curriculum, with no more than two a first year level and at least two at third year level. To be eligible, applicants seeking a second Teaching Area of focus must have four units of study relevant to the chosen discipline, as defined by the WA secondary school curriculum, with no more than two a first year level. If choosing Vocational Education and Training as a Minor Teaching Area applicants must have at least one year full time equivalent of industry experience. Entry to the course requires evidence of consistent and sustained high achievement (grades of credit and above) in a relevant undergraduate bachelor degree.
