Bachelor of Fine Arts (Acting)
National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), Sydney, NSW, Australia
About this program
NIDA's Bachelor of Fine Arts (Acting) is the course most people mean when they say they want to go to NIDA, and it carries the school's highest English language bar of any course: an Academic IELTS overall score of 8.0 (versus NIDA's general international baseline of 7.0, no band below 6.0), reflecting how much the training depends on nuanced spoken and performed English. It is a 3-year, full-time, on-campus course delivered across 4 disciplines, acting, voice, movement and music, with an optional Singing Actor pathway (introduced 2020) for selected students with advanced musical theatre skills, run largely alongside the main Acting cohort with separately timetabled singing, musicianship and acting-through-song classes.
Entry is by merit through a competitive, multi-round audition process rather than ATAR alone: applicants submit an online application and video audition, with shortlisted candidates invited to an in-person recall audition in Australia. NIDA's 2026 commencing cohort data shows 42% of the BFA intake (across all disciplines) is admitted on selection criteria with ATAR not a factor, alongside students from prior higher education, VET study, or work and life experience.
Alumni include Cate Blanchett, Sam Worthington, Judy Davis, Sarah Snook, Richard Roxburgh, Miranda Tapsell and Sophie Wilde, among many others, and graduating students perform in a public season attended by casting directors, agents and industry professionals as one of their final assessed units.
