Bachelor of Fine Arts (Costume)

NIDA's BFA (Costume) trains makers, not just designers: the course sits deliberately closer to the workroom than the drawing board. Over three years students build hands-on competency in pattern cutting, fitting, construction, dyeing, millinery, leatherwork and tailoring, working on real costumes for NIDA's public season rather than folio pieces alone. It has been ranked among the world's top ten costume courses, a fact the school leans on in recruitment, and the comparison is fair: few undergraduate costume programs anywhere put this many construction hours into a three-year degree.

The career track this points at is costume making and costume supervision (theatre, film and increasingly streaming production in Sydney's growing screen sector) rather than costume design as a standalone creative role (that lives more in the Design for Performance course). Graduates tend to move into workrooms, wardrobe departments and supervisory roles on professional productions, sometimes returning to NIDA itself as workshop staff.

Because every cohort works across NIDA's actual production calendar, the degree doubles as an apprenticeship: students fit real actors, meet real deadlines, and answer to a costume supervisor the way they will on a professional job, well before graduation.
