Bachelor of Fine Arts (Design for Performance)

Where the Costume degree trains makers, BFA (Design for Performance) trains the designers who conceive the whole visual world of a production: set, costume, lighting and increasingly video, learned in combination rather than as separate tracks. Students take on key design roles across NIDA's public season over three years, working directly with directing, acting and technical production students under real staging conditions: a design has to survive a get-in, a budget meeting and a director's notes, not just look good in a folio.

The course structure reflects a specific argument NIDA makes about design training: that a set designer who has never had to think about how lighting or costume will interact with their set is only half-trained, so students are pushed toward frameworks that treat spatial design, costume, lighting, sound and staging as one integrated problem rather than four separate electives.

Graduates tend to move into design and associate design roles across Australian theatre and opera companies, with several going on to the MFA (Design for Performance) or directly into industry design assistant positions, carrying a body of produced work rather than a purely academic portfolio.
