About this program
The fashion design degree at RMIT runs 13 core courses across three years, moving from conceptual, almost sculptural ideas about fashion in first year through to a fully resolved design project launch in the final semester. First-year units like Introduction to Fashion Design Practice deliberately don't ask students to make wearable, sellable clothes yet - the point is learning to explore and document ideas before technical constraints narrow things down.
By second year the brief tightens: students work with conventional fashion materials and construction methods and start producing genuinely transformative design work, and third year turns into presentation and industry-facing practice, culminating in a project launch that functions like a mini fashion show crossed with a thesis defence. RMIT pairs students with industry and external partners throughout, with sustainability and ethical production treated as a design constraint from day one rather than an add-on elective late in the course - which matters given how much scrutiny the fashion industry gets on exactly that front.
Graduates leave with an actual portfolio of practice and research, and RMIT produces a digital publication each year showcasing graduating cohorts to an international audience of industry scouts and press.
