Bachelor of Laws

RMIT University, Melbourne, VIC, Australia

About this program

RMIT's Bachelor of Laws is a three year degree, compressed against the more common four year law degree structure, delivered from RMIT's city campus in Melbourne's CBD, close to the courts, tribunals and legal organisations it draws on for real world experience. It is fully accredited by the Victorian Legal Admissions Board (VLAB) and satisfies the academic requirements for admission to the Australian legal profession, once graduates complete Practical Legal Training (PLT) afterward. The course is shaped by an advisory board of partners from top tier law firms and senior barristers, and has a strong technology focus, including access to the legal AI tool Harvey.ai in select subjects from Semester 2, 2026. Students also have access to Anika Legal, a law clinic co-located on RMIT's CBD campus, for community driven legal practice experience during the degree. Assessment favours practical, real world tasks, such as writing a memorandum of advice, over traditional exams and essays, and the degree includes a capstone experience in the final year.

You must first be admitted to an Australian state legal profession, which for an overseas or JD graduate means passing the assessed academic subjects, completing Practical Legal Training, and being admitted by the state Supreme Court, before the occupation is realistically usable for a visa.
