Diploma of Hospitality Management
South Metropolitan TAFE, Perth, WA, Australia
About this program
This diploma requires 28 units of competency (13 core plus 15 electives chosen in consultation with industry), and its most distinctive feature is where the practical training actually happens: South Metro TAFE runs students through the Bentley Pines Restaurant and Bar, a real, publicly dining venue on campus where students take on management responsibilities and serve actual paying customers rather than simulated ones. That's a genuinely different practical experience from hospitality courses that rely purely on mock service exercises.
There's no external work placement requirement, which is a little unusual for a hospitality qualification: the college's position is that the Bentley Pines operation already delivers the equivalent supervised, real-world management experience without students needing to source an outside venue and juggle two sets of rostering and assessment expectations.
Career outcomes the college points to include function manager, restaurant manager and front office manager roles, all management-track positions rather than entry-level service jobs, reflecting that this is the "management" diploma rather than the operational Certificate III/IV level that precedes it in the hospitality qualification ladder.
