Bachelor of Design (Visual Communication Design)
TAFE Queensland, Multi-campus, QLD, Australia
About this program
Delivered by TAFE Queensland in partnership with the University of Canberra, this is a dual-award structure: students complete a TAFE Queensland Diploma of Graphic Design en route to the University of Canberra's Bachelor of Digital Design (Visual Communication Design) testamur, which is the actual degree name that appears on the parchment despite the program being commonly listed under the broader title. The arrangement means students get a vocational, portfolio-heavy first phase before the degree work broadens into strategy and theory.
Studio work covers typography, logotype and identity design, publication layout, packaging, environmental graphics and digital design, taught by working designers rather than exclusively by academic staff. Class sizes at the South Bank and Coomera studios are kept small enough that students get direct one-on-one critique, which matters in a discipline where the difference between a portfolio that gets a graduate an interview and one that doesn't often comes down to individual feedback rather than course content.
Graduates leave with an industry-ready portfolio and typically move into junior graphic design, brand identity, digital design or in-house studio roles; the credit-transfer arrangement (any one-year TAFE Queensland diploma articulates with 24 credit points, equivalent to a full year of the bachelor's) also makes this a common re-entry point for students who started a diploma elsewhere and want to upgrade to a degree.
