This course gives you a strong foundation in fashion design principles, trend forecasting, textiles selection, patternmaking, and garment production. You'll also explore the commercial aspects of the industry, marketing and retail operations - ensuring you graduate with a well-rounded skill set that's highly sought after by employers.
TAFE Queensland's fashion training centres are the ideal place for you to launch your fashion career. Equipped with numerous sewing machines, overlockers, computer labs and cutting rooms; everything you need is at your fingertips to bring your creations to life and ready to hit the runway. Our graduates have gone on to create or work for a host of successful labels including LSKD, Billabong, Marc Jacobs, Easton Pearson and Black Milk Clothing.
Successful completion of this course will give you the necessary skills and attributes to seek employment as a fashion designer and stylist, dressmaker, machinist, tailor, fashion accessories designer and fashion retailer. Completion also provides great articulation opportunities into higher education courses.
TAFE Queensland offers this qualification only as 2 separate named real streams, with no single unqualified version: Diploma of Apparel, Fashion and Textiles (Design and product development); Diploma of Apparel, Fashion and Textiles (Business). Admissions
Completion of an Australian Year 12 qualification, or the equivalent international qualification. Skills check Domestic students You will be invited to complete a Skills Check following your application submission, before enrolling to your studies. This helps you to decide if your course is right for you and allows us to understand your current abilities in English, Maths, as well as using Digital technology. The recommended benchmark levels for this course are 4 in English, 4 in Maths and 4 in Digital Technology. If you are applying for a VET Student Loan the required levels to meet academic eligibility, as outlined by Commonwealth guidelines, is Level 4 English and Maths. Selection criteria Domestic and International students To successfully complete this qualification, it is highly recommended applicants for this course should evidence one of the following: A Certificate III level qualification from the MST Textiles, Clothing and Footwear or the following three units: - MSTAT2001 Prepare and communicate design concepts for simple textile products - MSTAT3001 Produce technical drawings of garments - MSTAT3005 Sew garments Note - Students who have completed the MST31022 Certificate III in Apparel, Fashion and Textiles have the knowledge and skills listed above. Enrolment Conditions apply for students under 18 years of age. TAFE at Schools Foundation Program The Fashion Foundation Program is offered to school students only via our TAFE at Schools program. Study contributes to MST50122 Diploma of Apparel, Fashion and Textiles (Design and product development). International students The following Selection criteria requirements apply only to International students: - English Language Proficiency: Academic IELTS 6.0 (no individual band less than 5.5) or equivalent - For a list of all English Language tests accepted by TAFE Queensland International. - Academic Requirements: Completion of Year 12 (or equivalent). Non school-leavers must have relevant work experience or qualification that indicates likely success of course completion. View more information on the international education achievement levels equivalent to Year 10 and 12. Applicants should be a minimum of 17 years of age and turning 18 during the first year of study with TAFE Queensland. International students who are under 18 years of age and are applying for a student visa are required by the Australian Department of Home Affairs to have adequate welfare arrangements in place.
