About this program
Biomedicine is the degree Melbourne built specifically to feed its graduate Doctor of Medicine, and that purpose shapes almost everything about it. The degree is based at the Parkville biomedical precinct, meaning students share a postcode with the Royal Melbourne Hospital, the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, and the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, and undergraduate research placements with those institutions are genuinely available, not just marketing material.
Not every Biomedicine student is aiming for medicine, though the majority are. The degree also produces graduates heading into biomedical research, genetic counselling, and other health science pathways, and the major structure (which includes options in areas like cell and developmental biology, pathology, and pharmacology) is broad enough to support that. Entry to Melbourne's MD from Biomedicine isn't automatic; it still runs through GAMSAT and an interview process like any other pathway, so the degree functions as strong preparation and networking rather than a guaranteed backdoor.
The competition for spots inside the degree itself is intense. Biomedicine has historically been one of the highest ATAR-cutoff undergraduate degrees in the country, and the cohort culture reflects that: a lot of students are running a fairly explicit long-term plan from day one rather than exploring broadly the way a BA cohort might.

- Year 1: Biomolecules and Cells, Genetics and the Evolution of Life, Human Structure and Function, Chemistry for Biomedicine
- Year 2: major selection (Cell and Developmental Biology, Human Structure and Function, Immunology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Neuroscience, or others), Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
- Year 3: advanced major subjects, research-methods subject, capstone research or laboratory project
- Breadth subjects required outside the science faculty, consistent with the wider Melbourne Model structure
- Strong emphasis throughout on preparation for graduate-entry professional degrees (MD, Doctor of Dental Surgery, Doctor of Physiotherapy)
Admissions
Completion of Year 12 (or equivalent); ATAR of approximately 92-97, a common pathway toward Medicine/Dentistry postgraduate entry; prerequisite Units 3/4 Chemistry and Mathematical Methods recommended.
