Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Honours)
University of Newcastle, Newcastle, NSW, Australia
About this program
Newcastle earned its engineering reputation the old way, as a steel and coal town where the university's engineering faculty grew up alongside heavy industry, and the civil program still has that industrial-region character: final-year projects regularly come from Hunter Valley coal infrastructure, port and rail logistics (the Port of Newcastle is the world's largest coal export port), and increasingly renewable energy and offshore wind projects as the region transitions.
The Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Honours) is Engineers Australia accredited, four years, with the honours component built in rather than a separate add-on year. That structure suits students planning to go straight into industry with a Washington Accord-recognised qualification. Students complete a mandatory 12 weeks of Professional Engineering Practice (industry placement) before graduating, and Newcastle's placement office leans hard on its Hunter region industry ties to place students with firms like local engineering consultancies, Ausgrid, and Hunter Water rather than leaving it entirely to students to source their own.
Final-year thesis projects are supervised individually and often tie into the university's structural, geotechnical, or water engineering research groups, with some students publishing or presenting findings at student engineering conferences.

Occupations this degree typically leads to, and their skilled-migration list status
Civil EngineerANZSCO 233211
On both MLTSSL and CSOL, supporting 189/190/491 and the employer-sponsored 482/186. A degree accredited by Engineers Australia makes the skills assessment close to a formality; a non-accredited degree instead needs a Competency Demonstration Report.
