About this program
Newcastle's Bachelor of Psychological Science is APAC accredited, which is the qualification students actually need if they want a clear run at postgraduate clinical training later. It's the first of the standard three-plus-two (or three-plus-one-plus-master's) pathway toward registration as a psychologist in Australia, so most students here are aiming past the bachelor's degree from day one rather than treating it as a terminal qualification.
The school runs its own on-campus research clinic and has active research groups in areas like addiction and cognitive neuroscience, giving students earlier access to research participation and honours supervision than at some larger, more anonymous psychology schools. Newcastle also has a notable strength in health and behavioural science more broadly, given the university's medical school and public health programs sit close by, so cross-disciplinary units and guest teaching from medical faculty aren't unusual.
Fourth-year (honours) places are competitive and GPA-gated, which students are told about clearly from second year, and the honours thesis is individually supervised with a genuine expectation of a publishable-quality piece of research by the end.
