About this program

UQ Engineering carries real weight in mining, minerals processing, and chemical engineering specifically. The Sustainable Minerals Institute is a globally recognised research centre, and it's not unusual for chemical and mining engineering students to end up working on SMI-affiliated research projects for their thesis, something a lot of comparable engineering schools around the country can't offer at the same depth given Queensland's genuine resources industry base.

The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) is a four-year, Engineers Australia accredited degree covering the standard range of majors (civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, mining, software, and others), with all students completing a common first year before choosing a major, giving some flexibility to switch specialisations early without losing time. A mandatory professional practice component (minimum weeks of industry experience) is built into the degree, and UQ's engineering placement office benefits from strong ties to Queensland's resources and infrastructure sectors as well as multinational engineering firms with Brisbane offices.

Final-year thesis projects are individually supervised and, for students in minerals, energy, or water-related majors, frequently connect to one of UQ's larger applied research centres rather than being a purely academic exercise, which gives some graduates a direct route into industry-sponsored postgraduate research if they want it.
