About this program
UQ's Bachelor of Social Work qualifies graduates as registered social workers, training them to support individuals, families, groups and communities facing social exclusion or distress. Students complete 1,000 hours of supervised placement across settings including hospitals and public and private agencies, with the option to apply for a rural, interstate or international placement. Core courses include human development and social work, working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and the moral and ethical foundations of social work, and teaching uses simulated client encounters so students can practise real-world responses before working with actual clients. Because the profession requires a higher IELTS band than most UQ undergraduate degrees, it is aimed at students with strong English proficiency. Graduates typically move into roles such as counsellor, child welfare worker, family therapist or community worker.
