Graduate Certificate in Learning Studies (Primary)

University of Queensland, Brisbane, QLD, Australia

About this program

The Graduate Certificate in Learning Studies (Primary) is an exit award at the University of Queensland rather than a program you apply for directly. It is granted to students enrolled in UQ's Master of Teaching (Primary) who complete at least 8 units of that program's coursework and then choose, or need, to withdraw before finishing the full qualification. The certificate recognises the education theory and classroom foundations covered in the early part of the Master of Teaching (Primary), including child development, literacy and numeracy teaching and inclusive classroom practice, but it is not approved for teacher registration in Australia because it falls short of a full initial teacher education qualification. Students who want to teach in a Queensland primary school need to complete the full Master of Teaching (Primary) or an equivalent accredited program instead. Entry, coursework and English language requirements all mirror the parent Master of Teaching (Primary) program at the point a student is enrolled in it.

Course structure

1 term of coursework

  • This is an exit award from UQ's Master of Teaching (Primary), not a program with its own course list. Students are awarded the Graduate Certificate in Learning Studies (Primary) if they withdraw from the Master of Teaching (Primary) after successfully completing at least 8 units drawn from that program's course list, which covers areas such as contemporary theories of development and learning, introduction to teaching mathematics, building inclusive primary classrooms and teaching science. The certificate is not approved for teacher registration in Australia

Admissions

There is no direct entry pathway for this certificate. Students reach it only by first being admitted to and enrolling in UQ's Master of Teaching (Primary), which requires a bachelor's degree in any discipline, at least one year of full-time equivalent study relevant to the primary curriculum, and a grade point average (GPA) of 4.0 on UQ's 7-point scale.
