About this program
The Graduate Certificate in Professional Legal Practice at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) is the practical legal training required for admission as a lawyer in New South Wales, taken after a qualifying law degree. From 2026 the NSW Legal Profession Admission Board requires 15 days on campus and 15 days of practical experience.
Students complete three core coursework subjects on professional skills and contemporary legal practice, plus a supervised work placement. The course satisfies the practical legal training requirements for admission to the Supreme Court of NSW. English requirements are IELTS Academic 7.0 overall.

On both MLTSSL and CSOL, but a positive skills assessment is not the same as being able to practise. You must first be admitted to an Australian state legal profession, which for an overseas or JD graduate means passing the assessed academic subjects, completing Practical Legal Training, and being admitted by the state Supreme Court, before the occupation is realistically usable for a visa.

Completed Australian Bachelor of Laws, Australian Juris Doctor, or NSW Legal Profession Admission Board Diploma in Law within the past 5 years OR Completed Australian Bachelor of Laws, Australian Juris Doctor, or NSW Legal Profession Admission Board Diploma in Law more than 5 years ago AND A written assessment of the legal qualification from the NSW Legal Profession Admission Board (LPAB) to ensure the qualification meets the current LPAB admission requirements OR Completed overseas legal qualification AND A written assessment from the NSW Legal Profession Admissions Board (LPAB)
