About this program
UNSW's Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) is an accredited program leading to eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers, covering social work practice, social and behavioural sciences, and specific fields of practice including work with Aboriginal communities, counselling skills, community and group work, mental health, trauma and child protection. Students build research skills throughout the degree and complete either an independent research thesis or a professional practice portfolio as their honours capstone, drawing on the extensive expertise of qualified social work practitioners who teach the program. Two separate field placements in years three and four give students substantial practical experience before graduation, with the Honours Thesis pathway requiring a 70 weighted average mark while the Advanced Practice Honours Portfolio has no such cutoff. It suits students who want a fully accredited social work qualification combining genuine scholarly rigour with substantial hands-on field experience.
