About this program
UNSW's Master of Health Professions Education (Research) is designed for teachers and educational administrators working within the health professions who want to build genuine research skills, requiring an original investigation under supervision for a minimum of three academic sessions full-time or four sessions part-time or external, culminating in a thesis. Candidates can enrol as internal students at a campus or teaching hospital, or as external students spending a minimum of 14 weeks in the School during the program, with external research work requiring a co-supervisor at the host institution where necessary. Because the degree is entirely research-driven, the specific health education research question depends on the individual candidate's interests and available supervision. It suits health professions educators with a genuine research question about how health professionals are taught and trained, who want a formal research credential rather than a taught postgraduate education qualification.

Admissions
A candidate for the degree shall: Have an MBBS or other medical degree (including such qualifications from another country), or Have been awarded the degree of Bachelor, and have relevant experience. In addition to (1) or (2), the candidate must have support from the proposed supervisor and the relevant Head of School. In exceptional cases an applicant who submits evidence of such other academic and professional qualifications as may be approved by the Committee may be permitted to enrol for the degree. If the Committee is not satisfied with the qualifications submitted by an applicant the Committee may require the applicant to undergo such assessment or carry out such work as the Committee may prescribe, before permitting enrolment.
